Was browsing t'interweb in a stalkerish fashion to find pic of my delightful professor-doctor so i could share my passion for him with friends ... and found this nugget in a pregnancy/RA article - that HRT and the pill help reduce RA symptoms.

Is it true, is my menopause now officially something to start willing on?

(Can't search for HRT properly on here, search rules won't let me use only 3 letters. So sorry if I'm missing an obvious thread. )

Well you have got me thinking now Franky!
I was on HRT when I started with RA and stopped it about 3 years ago, which is about the time when my RA started to get worse!
I hadn't made the connection until now, but of course it could just be coincidence.

The contraceptive pill only fakes the women's body into thinking she is pregnant continously and therefore I would say it wouldn't dampen down RA symptoms like pregnancy does. The hormones which are derived from a baby are not present whilst taking the Pill.

Franky

I started to take HRT in 1997.
I wanted protection against osteoporosis, as menopause at 41 is not good - it also prevented aches I had been having.
I stopped my HRT in March 2007 (as recommended by GP - I was 51).
My aches and pains became increasingly worse and more frequent.
At my first diagnosis appointment March 2008 – I asked if going back on HRT would help – but was told it wouldn’t, so I didn’t.
Looking back I had had RA pains on and off since 2003, which certainly increased in frequency and severity once off HRT. I believe – had I continued with HRT in 2007 – RA would not have become so active, so quickly.
Like Doreen – of course it could just be coincidence?
Would be interested to hear of other's experiences.

hi

I took the pill continuously for 2 yrs (no monthly bleed) as I found it really did help be live with the RA. I find my RA is very hormonally linked and the surges and dips in hormone in the monthly cycle effect me hugely- flaring at every period is awful, takes wks to get over properly and then you are well onto the next cycle.

after having bernice and richard having had "the op" I really dont want to consider the pill again but might ask the GP if there is an alternative yet

Hi Beth

I went on HRT as I went through the menopause at about 42, and came off HRT when first signs of RA appeared last May. I am seeing my GP on Friday for bits and pieces and will bring the subject up. If HRT doesn t present a problem with my current meds I would like to go back on it. I was on Elleste Duet Conti.

I will let you know how it goes.

Hi, this is really interesting, hadnt thought about it before, so thanks Franky. I was on HRT too, up until 2 years ago, when my GP recommended I come off it, and that I should have finished the menopause by then. My symptoms started about 4 years ago, and since being off the HRT its definitely worse, hadn't even noticed it was until I read this. Had been asking for tests etc for ages, and they wouldnt listen, even though my mum had RA. Be interesting to see how many others say tjhe same thingSmile
